Tools To Keep Up With Digital Marketing

Let’s be real, the world of digital marketing moves fast. One minute you’re mastering Instagram Reels, the next you’re trying to crack TikTok’s latest algorithm update and the next day you’re signing up for Threads.

Everything changes, all of the time. That’s why being a lifelong learner when you work in marketing isn’t just helpful: it’s essential. If you don’t keep up to date with things, you’ll eventually get left behind.

That doesn’t mean you have to jump on each new channel or trend – knowledge is power and it’s important to be aware of what’s out there – once you’re aware you have the knowledge to choose. Ask – “is this a channel my target audience are likely to interact on” “Will adding this into my marketing add value and help me to reach my goals” – make sure you always refer back to your purpose, strategy and goals before deciding whether to invest time or money into something new.

Keeping up with the constant change can be overwhelming, especially when you’re a solo marketeer or trying to run a business. That’s why I wanted to share my favourite tools (and a few insider tips) that I use to keep me and my clients ahead of the game.

Being a lifelong learner in marketing is non-negotiable

Marketing isn’t like fine wine – it doesn’t get better with age if you just leave it alone. Trends shift, platforms evolve and customer behaviour can change overnight. What worked six months ago might now bring very different results.

That’s why I try to soak up knowledge from a variety of tools to keep up with digital marketing. These include podcasts, blogs, networking with other marketers, and using analytics to measure what’s working for me and my clients.

What are the best tools for learning about digital marketing?

Podcasts and Blogs are my go to! They both serve different purposes depending on my mood, schedule and the way I learn. I tend to use a combination of the two.

Podcasts – a portable mentor

Podcasts are like having a marketing mentor in your ear, casually dropping wisdom while you go about your day. Picture this: You’re at the gym, walking the dog or trying to cook dinner, but your mind is elsewhere wondering why your latest Instagram post isn’t getting traction. This is prime podcast time.

They’re perfect for:

  • Multitaskers – Commuting, cleaning, or cooking? Pop on some headphones and learn while you’re doing.
  • People who learn by listening – If you’ve had enough of staring at a screen, or screen reading isn’t accessible to you, podcasts are the one.
  • Staying updated in real-time – Many marketing podcasts release new episodes weekly, so you’re always in the loop.

The best part? They often feature real marketers sharing real stories, and not just theory. You’ll hear about the things that worked (and things that didn’t), and hear the kind of insider tips you won’t find in a textbook.

Podcasts to keep up with Digital Marketing trends

  • Freelance Friday Podcast by Latasha James – This is actually created for social media managers but there are tonnes of great tips in there for business owners too! It’s brilliant for keeping up with trends without the jargon overload.
  • Girls in Marketing Podcast – This one is a fun and relatable podcast, with some easy-to-implement tips for small business owners and marketers out there.

Blogs – for when you need visuals and have time to focus.

Now, let’s talk about blogs. Because sometimes, you need to slow down and see something written down to absorb it. Especially if you’re a visual learner, or what you’re learning involves data and charts.

Blogs are my go-to when:

  • I need step-by-step guides
  • I want to bookmark and revisit key points
  • I’m researching something specific or data driven (like SEO or email marketing) and need deep, structured insights or charts to make it make sense.

Plus, let’s be honest: Blogs are skimmable. And the best marketing blogs pack their articles with actionable tips, not just waffle and sales links.

So, which one do I prefer? Honestly, both. Podcasts help me stay informed on the go, while blogs help me dig deeper when I need detail, data, and process. The trick is to choose ones that are relatable and explain things clearly (without the jargon), and aren’t just trying to sell you something.

Blogs to help you keep up with Digital Marketing trends

  • HubSpot Blog – The holy grail of marketing tips. HubSpot has a huge amount of free resources available on their blog. From free resource downloads to reports on the current data and trends. It’s often my go to for keeping up to date with latest trends in marketing and the impact they’re having.
  • SEMrush Blog – Made with marketing geeks and SEO nerds in mind. This is a great blog for those of you who love a deeper dive or want to delve into the nitty gritty of websites and SEO.
  • Sprout Social Insights – Sprout Social is jam packed full of social media tips, reports, free downloads, planners and more! It’s social media strategy – made simple.

Don’t forget to embrace real-world and local learning

Beyond the tools, two things I do to keep my knowledge and methods fresh and relevant are:

  • Using Analytics to see what’s working for me and my clients – I test strategies with my clients across different platforms and industries. Using analytics platforms such as Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics, Metricool Analytics etc. It’s key to understand that the marketing that is working for a bakery won’t necessarily work for a B2B tech firm so the strategies and tactics you use will need to be tailored for your specific business or industry.
  • Networking with business owners and other marketers – Asking people how their marketing is going, if they are seeing any trends, where they are seeing the most success can provide even more real life insights into digital marketing. Swap stories with fellow marketers can help us to spot trends early and find ways of succeeding in a matter of weeks rather than months. Listening and learning will get you far!

Remember – the best marketers aren’t just good or knowledgeable –  they’re adaptable.

They measure, learn, test, tweak and repeat to help your business thrive!
