If you’re wondering how to build your personal brand on LinkedIn?
Why it is important to have a personal brand in today’s world?
Or how building a personal brand on LinkedIn can help you get where you want to be?
I’m about to answer all your questions!
In today’s world, building digital trust matters just as much as face-to-face rapport. And that means developing your personal brand online can be a marketing secret weapon.
Whether you’re a small business owner, author, influencer or public speaker – in this blog I’ll show you how to build your personal brand on LinkedIn, and why it’s so important.

Why do I need a personal brand on LinkedIn?
LinkedIn has become the go-to place for job hunting, hiring and getting involved in key industry conversations. It’s also the perfect platform to connect and engage with new people, stay on the radar of your existing connections, and follow up after networking events.
It’s also a great platform to build a powerful personal brand. Don’t worry, you don’t need to become a full blown “influencer” – personal branding is really about showing up authentically as you. Because really, a personal brand is simply about how people understand who you are and what you care about. With LinkedIn, you get to help shape that narrative.

Step 1 – Create a great LinkedIn profile.
Think of your LinkedIn profile like a conversation starter at a networking event (remember what I told you about elevator pitches?). You wouldn’t waltz up to people at an event and say “I’m the owner of Joe’s cafe.” and nothing else. You’d take the time to explain what you do and why you do it. Your profile has several sections – let’s look at each one in turn.
- Headline: Go beyond “Managing Director” and tell people key information about what problem you solve.
- Photo: Choose a photo which is good quality, clear, friendly and professional. You don’t necessarily need a professional photographer but make sure your image is clear and has good lighting.
- Banner: Use this space to showcase your business and build your brand identity – think branded graphics or an image of you in “action”.
- About section: Share an overview of your business, services and the challenges you solve for your customers / clients.
- Experience and Education: Tell the story of your career journey and showcase your best work. Try sharing case studies, or links to videos you’ve produced or articles that you’ve written.
Step 2 – Connect with people through your LinkedIn content.
You don’t need to churn out tonnes of content, you just need to be consistent. If posting once a week works for you, then do that. The key to building trust is to be authentic and reliable.
Here are some post ideas to help you connect:
- Describe a business challenge that you recently overcame, and what it taught you.
- Showcase a proud moment with a customer (think positive reviews, or a time that your services made a real difference).
- Share pictures from a recent event, such as a networking meeting, or a staff social.
- Share an honest reflection on your journey as a business owner.
- Comment on industry news and explain how it impacts your clients.
Be sure to tag any businesses or individuals who are included or are relevant to your post so they can see it. They might even comment or reshare it to their network too.

Step 3 – Listen and engage.
Like with any conversation, listening on LinkedIn matters just as much as what you say. In fact, some of the strongest personal brands are built through listening and engaging – so here’s how to smash your LinkedIn engagement strategy:
- If you’re going to comment on posts in your network, make it thoughtful and add value.
- Support your customers and peers by sharing and celebrating their wins.
- Ask questions, reply to comments and send messages when something resonates.
Remember: Small talk isn’t meaningless, it builds trust. And that trust is what keeps you in the front of people’s minds. This can help with getting more referrals, business partnerships and repeat custom.

Step 4 – Share your insights.
You don’t need a TED Talk to be a thought leader, but you do need to share your thoughts on the key issues affecting your sector. Try these ideas to showcase your expertise and help people all at the same time:
- Write a post that breaks down a complex challenge your clients face
- Summarise a helpful webinar or article you came across
- Share your perspective on a new trend or key development in your sector
Build credibility by sharing your insights without expecting anything in return.

Step 5 – Use LinkedIn analytics to give people more of what they like.
LinkedIn analytics are a super useful tool to help you learn what kind of posts and topics your audience cares about. Here are some key metrics to keep an eye on:
- Who’s commenting on your posts
- Which topics get more engagement
- What kind of people are viewing your profile
This isn’t about chasing likes. It’s about learning what matters to your audience and offering them something they actually value.
Step 6 – Get started
You don’t have to become a content marketing expert overnight. Just take it one small step at a time. Update your headline. Share a post a week. Comment on something that moved you.
Over time, small actions add up – not just to stronger connections but to more trust and better opportunities.
So go ahead. Be seen, be helpful – and above all be human.
