How to Use AI for Social Media Marketing

Using AI for Social Media Marketing isn’t just something big name firms and large organisations have access to, it’s brilliant for freelancers and small business owners like us, who want to work smarter, not harder. It can help you to save time, boost consistency and make your content more effective when used the right way. But here’s the golden rule – while AI is brilliant for support, it should never replace your unique personality and authentic voice.

If you feel like social media moves faster than you can say “algorithm update,” I hear you! Between planning, designing, posting, and analysing, keeping up with the online trends can feel like a full-time job on its own. AI can really help you, think of it as your digital assistant, ready to take some of the heavy lifting off your plate so you can focus on the authentic, human side of your brand.

Let’s explore how you can use AI for social media marketing, while keeping your unique personality.

Think of AI like a sous-chef, prepping the ingredients while you plate the signature dish.

Why AI has become a must-have for social media

“Metricool surveyed hundreds of social media managers, freelancers, agency folks, and content creators, and discovered that 96% now use AI for social media tasks, and nearly three-quarters rely on it daily. AI has officially gone from “nice-to-have” to a must-have for virtually every social professional.” –  How Social Media Professionals Use AI in 2025 [Report]

Business owners who DIY their own marketing are missing a trick if they aren’t doing the same. Using AI for social media marketing can help business owners become more efficient and help them stay consistent while juggling all of their other day-to-day demands.

Marketers are adopting the power of AI to help with everything from:

  • Strategy and planning
  • Graphic design
  • Caption writing
  • Automating repetitive work

Below is a guide for how I use AI for each of the above tasks.

AI for social media strategy and planning

This is really where I think AI is most effective and can save a lot of time. To create a social media strategy, you can download reports from your channels, upload them into AI, and let it analyse and provide feedback on what to focus on to grow – all within a few clicks!

If you already have your services and target audience outlined, you can feed that into AI to help you produce annual planners and content calendars for your business

I show you how to do this (along with some great prompts) in my FREE social media planner download.

AI for graphic design

If you use Canva, chances are you’ve already used AI to support you with creating social media graphics. On the Pro plan, tools like “Resize” let you instantly adapt your designs for different platforms or for social media ad creatives.

There is also Canva’s Magic Studio umbrella which includes tools like:

  • Magic Expand
  • Background Generator
  • Magic Eraser
  • Magic Grab
  • Magic Edit
  • AI Photo Editor

Each of these tools streamlines your graphic design process, saving you precious time on editing graphics and images.

Now, I’ll be honest: I’m not a fan of copy-and-paste AI captions. They can sound really generic, cheesy and include far too many emojis for my liking. That being said, the best way to make AI write the most effective captions for your brand is by training it sound like you.  Start by giving it your brand guidelines – your values and your tone of voice. Then tell it about your target audience demographic, what their main pain points are that you’re speaking to, and what you want the post to achieve.

I use words like “persuasive” and “conversational” in my prompts to help make captions sound more like me and guide a reader to take the action you’d like them to take.

This helps the copy to feel much more like your brand, but even still I will spend time tweaking it afterwards – showing up on social media authentically is what your audience will connect with the most, so make sure it’s your voice that’s coming through on any captions going out there.

AI for automating repetitive work

Utilising AI for reporting and analysing data has definitely been a big win for me – and it’s helped me bring some big wins for my clients too.

I use Metricool’s social media scheduling tool, and the reporting function in it is fantastic and incredibly well laid out. I do spend time each month looking through what’s working (and what isn’t) and how to improve for the following month. But another great way to gain fresh insight is by uploading this data to an AI tool to analyse and provide objective feedback.

Use AI to make life easier, but keep it human

AI is a powerful, must-have tool for social media marketers and business owners in 2025. It helps us plan smarter, design faster, write quicker and make sense of data so we can up our marketing game.

But remember, your audience doesn’t follow you because of perfect captions or a streamlined workflow. They connect with you! Your humour, your stories, your relatable behind-the-scenes moments.

So use AI to save time and stay consistent, but don’t forget to add the human touch that makes your content authentic and engaging. Because no matter how clever AI gets, there’s still no algorithm in the world that can replace you.
